Relay for Life: Community and Team Building for a Worthy Cause

Earlier this month Advanced Remarketing Services participated in the Aquidneck Island Relay for Life here in Middletown, Rhode Island.

(Middletown, RI) Our team Cars for a Cure not only had a great time but helped raise money for a very worthy cause. Each team sets up a themed campsite where visitors can come and meet the team, enjoy a complimentary snack, or play a member of our team in cornhole. The Relay event does a great job at bringing local businesses and members of the community together. Participants take the time to remember loved ones lost, pay tribute to and honor survivors of cancer, and raise money for American Cancer Society who is leading the fight to cure cancer every day.

Relay for Life Evening Team

What is Relay for Life? It’s a community-based fundraising event for American Cancer Society. Each year, more than 5,000 Relay for Life events take place in over twenty countries. Each member of a team takes turns walking around a track or path. The events are usually 6-24 hours long. The Aquidneck Island event was held on June 2nd at the Gaudet Middle School sports annex in Middletown, RI.  The event ran from 2 pm to 11 pm. Each team was asked to have at least one member on the track at all times. This is done to signify that cancer never sleeps and cancer patients don’t get a break.

The ACS event has come a long way since Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt in 1985 ran and walked in circles around a track in Tacoma, Washington to raise money for American Cancer Society. Dr. Klatt did this on his own, but friends and family who watched were inspired to donate and by the end of the 24 hrs he had raised $27,000. The following year in 1986 the first Annual Relay for Life event took place with 19 teams raising $33,000.

Cancer is definitely a scary word that none of us like to hear! For some, cancer may be that – just a scary word. But for many others, cancer is much more.  Statistics show that cancer has probably at some point impacted you or a family member in some way. Cancer lives in every corner of the world and has an unlimited reach, and is a nondiscriminating disease that attacks men, women, and children of all ages and races. In the United States in 2018, there will be an estimated 1,735,350 new cancer diagnoses with approximately 609,640 people dying from the disease.

Currently, there is no cure for cancer. However, thanks to organizations like the American Cancer Society and events like Relay for Life there have been so many breakthroughs in the treatments of all forms of cancer. More and more people are beating cancer thanks to the millions of volunteers and countless donations that fund so many of ACS’s programs.
