Three words to describe the company’s EAT LOCAL, EAT FRESH program: Tasty…Variety…Healthy. YES! I discovered that carrots come in many colors with subtle taste differences. And, YES! I rediscovered I do not like beets. It was a fun idea. We never knew what would show up on the table. ‘Best of Show’: Kristine’s shark/boat!!!

Ours is a farming community, which makes summer one of the best times of the year for us because we get fresh fruits and veggies loaded with indescribable flavors and colors.  If you’ve ever plucked a tomato from the garden and ate it like an apple you know what I mean.  If you haven’t, put that on your bucket list.

Here in the office, we take advantage of the best our farmers have to offer through our EAT LOCAL, EAT FRESH program.  Every other week throughout the summer, we bring the seasonal harvest to our company table, for all employees to enjoy.  The objective is to support local farmers, support the local community, and enjoy our local bounty.  The hope is that by offering healthy fruits and veggies, every employee will add something to their diet that benefits their health; “growing food” as I like to call it.  Also, we’d love to offer something employees never tried before, but now suddenly can’t live without.

When we EAT LOCAL, we not only eat fresh, but we support farmers who have a difficult time competing against the large businesses that dominate the US food industry.  When we buy directly from farmers, they get a much better return for their produce and a better chance at remaining sustainable farms.

Did you know in the U.S. your food travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your plate?   Between the incredibly large amounts of natural resources it takes to harvest, prepare and transport that food, to the trash created from extra packaging, it is easily apparent the negative impact conventional agriculture has on our environment.  Buying local minimizes that impact and offers greater benefits on many levels…health, environment, and sustainability.

So, no matter where you are located, look for ways to EAT LOCAL and EAT FRESH.  Every region has its own seasonal bounty and the people who dedicate their lives to making it available to you.  Take advantage of the “farm to table”, or “sea to table” freshness in your own backyard.
