6/3/2009 Don't get taken for a ride when donating a car


The scam: It sounds like a win-win proposition. An organization needs a vehicle -- nothing fancy, just basic transportation. You're ready for an upgrade, so you donate. That should bring you a bit of satisfaction in helping someone in need as well as a sweet little tax write-off. Or at least it should.

How it works: We're exposed to advertising for car donations in print, on the radio, on billboards -- in all sorts of media. Some organizations that solicit used cars are legitimate charities, but some are fronts for used-car sellers. Give to them and you not only lose the chance to help someone in need, you also lose the tax benefit.

What to do: Check out the Internal Revenue Service's Publication 4303. It's a simple pamphlet on what you need to know before donating your car. And most importantly, make sure you're working with a qualified charity. The IRS has a list of them.
